Titre : Television production, funding models and exploitation of content Titre original : Producción de televisión, modelos de financiación y explotación de contenidos Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Gillian Doyle, Auteur Année de publication : 2016 Article en page(s) : pp. 75-96 Langues : Anglais Catégories : MEDIAS: COMMUNICATION & JOURNALISME - Aspects généraux

MEDIAS:AUDIOVISUEL:NUMERIQUE: Aspect socio-culturelTags : communication numérique plateforme Europe médias médias de masse multimédia technologies journalisme svod Résumé : "The rise of digital platforms has transformative implications for strategies of financing media production and for exploitation of the economic value in creative content.
In the television industry, changes in technologies for distribution and the emergence of SVOD services such as Netflix are gradually shifting audiences and financial power away from broadcasters while at the same time creating unprecedented opportunities for programme-makers. Drawing on findings from recent RCUK-funded research, this article examines how these shifts are affecting production financing and the economics of supplying television content. In particular, it focuses on how changes in the dynamics of rights markets and in strategic approaches towards the financing of television production might mean for markets, industries and for policies intended to support the economic sustainability of independent television content production businesses."

"Abstract
Online public participation seems to be random, superfluous and unpredictable. However, a more thorough look allows us to deconstruct categories and patterns that, not only explain the new mechanisms allowed by the Web, but also aim at new possibilities for participation in organizations.
A comparative analysis was applied to several public participation mechanisms in the internet using Strauss and Glaser’s grounded theory method. The study showed that credibility, motivation and access are central to the morphology and success of new social movements. It also proposes a structured foundation for discussing virtual spontaneous social organizations."

This book provides an in-depth comparative analysis of inequality and the stratification of the digital sphere.
Grounded in classical sociological theories of inequality, as well as empirical evidence, this book defines ‘the digital divide’ as the unequal access and utility of internet communications technologies and explores how it has the potential to replicate existing social inequalities, as well as create new forms of stratification. The Digital Divide examines how various demographic and socio-economic factors including income, education, age and gender, as well as infrastructure, products and services affect how the internet is used and accessed. Comprised of six parts, the first section examines theories of the digital divide, and then looks in turn at:
Highly developed nations and regions (including the USA, the EU and Japan);
Emerging large powers (Brazil, China, India, Russia);
Eastern European countries (Estonia, Romania, Serbia);
Arab and Middle Eastern nations (Egypt, Iran, Israel);
Under-studied areas (East and Central Asia, Latin America, and sub-Saharan Africa).
Providingan interwoven analysis of the international inequalities in internet usage and access, this important work offers a comprehensive approach to studying the digital divide around the globe. It is an important resource for academic and students in sociology, social policy, communication studies, media studies and all those interested in the questions and issues around social inequality."

Until recently, most digital media models tried to replicate the physical forms they replaced: e-books, downloadable music and movies, linear video games. The new wave of native digital content breaks free from those formats. Long-form media downloads and sell-through models, inherited from the constraints of physical distribution, are giving way to unbundled, long- and short-form content, streamed at will and paid for through subscriptions, micro-transactions or advanced advertising solutions.
Bain & Company’s annual survey of more than 7,000 consumers in Europe, the US and the BRICS countries gives a clear picture of the audience for this third wave of media (...)"
