"It is with great pleasure that this volume Opportunities for Media and Information Literacy in the Middle East and North Africa is presented as Yearbook 2016 from the International Clearinghouse on Children, Youth and Media, at Nordicom. The Yearbook is published in cooperation with UNESCO and UNAOC.
Opportunities for Media and Information Literacy in the Middle East and North Africa is the seventeenth Yearbook published by the Clearinghouse and fills a gap in the existing body of literature about the progress of media and information literacy work in different parts of the world. We believe it is of particular interest to shed light on a region, the MENA region, where young citizens’ engagement with media has been in focus in news reporting all over the world in recent years and awareness of MIL competencies is gaining ground."

"The Clearinghouse Yearbook 2014 focuses on children and young people in relation to media and health issues. Such issues represent central debates in contemporary society and pose major challenges for researchers and practitioners in a number of fields. The various contributions in the book provide different perspectives on the ways in which media and health are interrelated.
Several contributions deal with possible risks to the health and well-being of children and young people in relation to their use of media – as viewers, listeners, readers and being on the internet – including research on how media can influence young people’s physical and mental health. Other contributions treat young people’s health and well-being in relation to their rights to access information, express their views and participate in the media (Articles 12, 13 and 17 in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child). Media can, thus, also become powerful tools for participation and inclusion in groups and society."
