"In a context of increasing interconnectivity between different countries and cultures, globalisation became a matter of concern. This thesis aims at demonstrating that the phenomenon of glocalization, which refers to a process of resistance, negotiation and reappropriation, is more appropriated to describe TV flows and the export of TV series than the globalisation thesis. On the basis of theoretical concepts such as Hofstede’s cultural distance index, Straubhaar’s cultural proximity, and a close study of the factors at play in the export process, evidence will be provided that TV series are not homogeneously exported but undergo a process of adaptation resulting in hybrid products. The purposes of the case study are to epitomise the glocalization phenomenon, to examine how it is concretely expressed in audio-visual content, and to demonstrate that its instances are mostly visible in background and contextual elements. To do so, I analysed and compared the internationally exported Colombian TV series Yo Soy Betty la Fea with its American and Flemish adaptations, respectively called Ugly Betty and Sara. The analysis examined differences and similarities in genre, aesthetic elements and themes approached in the narrative. It revealed that instances of glocalization were particularly visible in aesthetic elements and secondary themes, thereby confirming my hypotheses."Note de contenu : Table des matières :

PERIODIQUESTags : médias télévision Canada diversité multiculturalité information journalisme discrimination Index. décimale : 306.4 Culture - sociologie Résumé : In Canada, as in other Western countries, non-white ethno-cultural groups are often portrayed in negative, stereotypic ways, or they are virtually invisible in the media discourse. This study examines the forces that shape news content at its principal site of production: the newsroom. A participant observer methodology was used to analyze a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) news and current affairs operation, specifically the influence of production norms on the coverage of minority groups. The analysis reveals how corporate culture, hiring diverse staff and the deployment of more resources can all work to bring diversity to news content. However, in this newsroom, more inclusive journalism remains sporadic, as mainstream bias pervades newsgathering routines."
