"Abstract
Online public participation seems to be random, superfluous and unpredictable. However, a more thorough look allows us to deconstruct categories and patterns that, not only explain the new mechanisms allowed by the Web, but also aim at new possibilities for participation in organizations.
A comparative analysis was applied to several public participation mechanisms in the internet using Strauss and Glaser’s grounded theory method. The study showed that credibility, motivation and access are central to the morphology and success of new social movements. It also proposes a structured foundation for discussing virtual spontaneous social organizations."
