“(…) Some of us were lucky enough to be touched by the great magic of Disney since our earliest childhood (…)
(…) But where does this magic come from? And, more importantly, what is the real magic of The Walt Disney Company? This question has gained more and more interest in the business world because of the extremely positive developments that the company has known recently. Indeed, despite the economic downturn following the financial crisis of September 2008, Disney has experienced a tremendous growth (…)
(…) However, inside each and every Disney’s experience, there are fictional characters and stories that support its magic. As it will be explained later in this thesis, these fictional characters and stories, for which the intrinsic value is sometimes gigantic, are often protected by copyrights. These copyrights secure somehow the value of the underlying creations to its owners. Given the rising importance that these intellectual property assets have recently experienced and Disney’s incontestable reliance on copyrighted works, it seems legitimate to look in this direction to discover the real magic of Disney. Would the real magic of Disney reside in its management of copyrighted contents? Therefore, the present thesis aims to provide an answer to the following question: Is the management of copyrighted contents the real magic of The Walt Disney Company? In order to answer this question, the thesis is structured around three distinctive parts.”
