Titre : Diversity in theory and practice. New journalists in Sweden and Germany Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Heike Graf, Editeur scientifique Editeur : Göteborg [Sweden] : Nordicom - Nordic Information Centre for Media and Communication Research Année de publication : 2011 Collection : Research Anthologies and Monographs Importance : 191 p. "Research on media and diversity has mainly focused on content analysis, or more precisely, on how immigrants are covered by the mass media. This book concentrates on the media workers themselves, and on mass media organizations. News journalists with immigrant backgrounds responded to interview questions such as: How do journalists with immigrant backgrounds experience their working conditions, career possibilities, and their possibilities of influencing media coverage? and How does ethnic diversity contribute to a change in the media coverage? Field studies were conducted in both Swedish and German newsrooms in order to explore diversity in practice. The volume deals also with the mass media as organization and with diversity from a theoretical stance by addressing the following question: What are the possibilities and limitations of mass media organizations in managing diversity issues in accordance with the common ideals of equal opportunity? Diversity management is discussed as one possible option. This book is the result of a multidisciplinary project that brings together work in sociology, journalism and media studies in order to analyze cultural diversity in media organizations."

"Public service broadcasters across Europe are venturing into the digital world, launching niche TV channels, building extensive websites, developing commercial services, entering into partnerships with external actors, and exploring new ways to reach users, whether its through smart phone apps or screens in public spaces. Such endeavours intensify fundamental discussions about what we need public service media institutions for. These are complex discussions, building on history, encompassing new technology, and involving a range of strong stakeholders. Recently, the so-called public value test has emerged as the focal point for these discussions. As a detailed regulatory scheme to measure the public worth and possible market impact of planned publicly funded media services, the public value test is causing controversy across Europe. This collection of short essays from academics, regulators, public broadcasters and private media representatives, provides thought-provoking perspectives on the state of play of public value tests in a range of European states. In so doing, the book is a topical intervention in the ongoing debate about the future of our media systems."

"Tony Blair demands it, Reuters wants it, the Spokane Spokesman-Review practices some of it and scholars try to define it – media accountability.
The need for media accountability was formulated more than 100 years ago and made manifest with codes of ethics and ”bureaus of accuracy”. The Hutchins Commission used the concept in 1947 as a way to avoid government prescription of media content. The practice of media accountability has since been fueled by market expansion, looser regulation of public service and a technological facilitation of media/public interaction.
In March 2007 these issues were discussed in a two-day international conference at the School of Communication and Design, University of Kalmar, Sweden. Scholars gave overviews of Media Accountability Systems (MAS), media journalism, media blogs and the effects of market-driven journalism on media accountability. Practitioners presented cases dealing with victims of the media in the United Kingdom, news ombudsmen and media critique in Scandinavia, and transparency in Spokane, Washington, USA."
