"This book is a collection of paper from a conference entitled "Medium with promising future" organised at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, on 9-10 June 2006. The conference drew radio specialists from a dozen or so European countries. They represented thirteen key universities and other European learned centres and participated in the proceedings of the International Radio Research Network (Consortium IREN) in the years of 2004-2006. The goals of the project Consortium IREN were the following :
1. To establish a network of researchers who specialise in the research on the radio, and to encourage young researchers to participate in the network.
2. To produce a map of competencies linked with the research on the radio, identify fields of interdisciplinary co-operation, the co-operation between research and radio broadcasters; to define the areas that call for development, especially comparative studies, to work out the state of research on the radio, an exchange of the methodology of indicators, etc.
3. To identify factors that enhance the citizens'opportunities to participate in the public sphere in the local, national, and European dimension.
4. To establish infrastructure to be developed after the project has been completed, especially among the radio researchers from Mid-East and South Europe
5. To establish a dialogue with the organisations of broadcasters at the national and European levels.
6. To make use of various kinds of conferences, publications, and the radio itself as a medium to spread the findings.
The project and our conference have been financed by the European Commission under group priority 7 "Citizens and Governance in a Knowledge Society" and the research domain "New forms of citizenship and cultural identities" Sixth Framework Programme of Technological Research and Development (FP6)."
