PERIODIQUESTags : télévision télévision numérique opérateurs Afrique Moyen-Orient à la demande Index. décimale : 791.45 Télévision (Loisir) Résumé : "The free-to-air and pay TV markets of the Middle East and Africa have had mixed fortunes over the past year.
In the Middle East, the free TV market – with the partial exception of pan-Arab broadcasters – has suffered from the effects of the multiple crises and conflicts that have plagued the region. Pay TV, on the other hand, has continued to make strong progress from a modest base.
In sub-Saharan Africa, progress towards digital switchover has been difficult. Pay TV on the other hand has seen a multiplicity of new services launch.
In Digital TV Europe’s Middle East & Africa 2014, we summarise the general trends, interview leading players in the Middle East and look at a range of new initiatives in train for Africa."

PERIODIQUESTags : Europe opérateurs télévision mobile vidéo à la demande écran partagé Index. décimale : 011.37 médias visuels et audiovisuels Résumé :
The big Picture (Introduction par Stuart Thomson - p.3):
The tablet and smartphone revolution continues to preoccupy content companies, pay TV incumbents and over-the-top upstarts alike. Multiscreen and over-the-top distribution dominate discussion at TV technology trade shows and conferences and are likely to continue to do so for some time.
Multiscreen TV is now mainstream. Pay TV subscribers in most markets now think of the ability to view content on a tablet or smartphone as a more or less inalienable right, and while services still have some way to go to match exactly what’s on offer on the main screen, rights deals are heading in that direction.
Pure OTT meanwhile presents a very varied picture, with premium SVoD offerings – such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Instant Video and BSkyB’s Now TV – sitting alongside a vast range of other services, including various ad-supported and freemium offerings.
This year’s DTVE Multiscreen & OTT series assesses the expansion of the OTT market and looks at the current challenges faced by providers of multiscreen services, taking in OTT strategies and challenges – including the viability of standalone and pay TV operator-led SVoD, TVoD and AVoD services. It also looks at recent developments in multiscreen strategies, including the use of tablets and smartphones as companion devices, and assesses recent and future evolution of the technology that underpins and supports the delivery of IP-based services from the cloud
Chapeaux des articles :
The Netfix effects :
Netflix’s next stage of its European expansion is now close, but will its success rate continue and how far is the SVOD giant informing the OTT strategies of other players in the European market? Andy McDonald reports
Good companions :
Understanding of the uses to which people put the different screens they own is still taking shape. From the development of companion apps dedicated to particular shows to the straightforward distribution of linear TV, broadcasters are still experimenting to find out what works – and what delivers revenue. Andy McDonald report
Passing clouds : Cloud-based delivery of multiscreen services is enabling service providers to experiment more freely with less risk, but broadcast and OTT delivery are likely to remain largely separate for now. Stuart Thomson reports.
The multiscreen survey:
In the final part of this week’s series of features about multiscreen and OTT TV, we survey a range of industry participants about some of the key issues and challenges relating to cross-device, online video distribution

PERIODIQUESTags : Moyen-Orient Afrique audiovisuel télécommunications télévision numérique étude de marché opérateurs Index. décimale : 621.382 Télécommunications Résumé : Présentation de l'éditeur :
"The Middle East has seen strong growth and increasing competition amongst pay TV players in recent years, with OSN and BeIN Sports fighting to attract subscribers.
Recently, the region has also seen the emergence of OTT players, encouraged to launch offerings targeted at a digital-savvy younger generation used to consuming content on mobile devices, the latest entrant being US player Starz. In the 2015 edition of DTVE Middle East & Africa, we survey some of these developments, including interviews with key players, and look at the continued importance in the region of tackling piracy.
Africa is now seen one of the world’s growth hot-spots, outperforming emerging markets elsewhere. A number of new pay TV services have emerged, often targeting emerging middle-income groups that find the premium offerings of MultiChoice beyond their reach, while existing players have launched new initiatives to capture this segment of the market.
In our 2015 issue of DTVE Middle East & Africa we interview two of sub-Saharan Africa’s emerging pay TV operators – StarTimes, which has expanded across multiple territories with DTH and DTT-based services, and Consat, which has targed middle-income subscribers in one of the continent’s key markets, Nigeria.
Finally, we survey the plans of one of the most innovative content players targeting the African market, France’s Trace, which has moved beyond simply offering TV channels to become a player in mobile, events and content creation."

"Our second annual survey once again sets out to research and distil what top executives are thinking about all the key topic areas discussed at conferences and trade events. The survey is based on the responses of over 380 industry executives from 42 countries to a series of questions on six hot topics. In addition to assessing views on the overall digital TV landscape – including the overall prospects of the pay TV business, the advent of OTT TV and changing patterns of consumer behaviour – we drill down to look in detail at the industry’s view of virtual reality and 360° video, Ultra HD, OTT TV, big data and next-generation video delivery technology. The impact of OTT TV services and technology is one of the principal overarching themes of this year’s survey. First, virtual reality has been a hot topic for the past year, and we look at how VR and 360° video could have an impact on the entertainment business, assessing the appeal of the format to consumers and the kind of content that could succeed in the market. Next, we focus on the industry’s views on Ultra HD TV and HDR, assessing likely factors for success and how important HDR will be to the overall Ultra HD TV experience. Third, we look at trends in OTT TV, including the growing importance of live streaming and Quality of Experience. We also assess the potential of big data to shape the OTT TV experience and deliver additional revenues and new business models for service providers. Finally, we look at the migration of video to IP and assess the impact of adaptive bit-rate (ABR) encoding and the emergence of OTT as a mainstream video delivery technology. The survey results, presented here in full, give a fascinating snapshot of how the industry views its own present state and future prospects."
