The main questions have now become whether the contemporary media conjuncture offers enough to our democracies, how their democratic investment can be deepened and how our communication rights can be expanded.
This book aims to look at four thematic areas that structure the opportunities for democratising (media) democracy. A first section is devoted to citizenship and the public spheres, giving special attention to the general theme of communication rights. The second section elaborates further on a notion central to communication rights, namely that of participation.
The third section returns to the traditional representational role in relation to democracy and citizenship, scrutinizing and criticizing the democratic efforts of contemporary journalism. The fourth section moves outside of the (traditional) media system, and deals with the diversity of media and communication strategies of activists.

"How free are the media in Europe? Freedom of the press and an independent media system are often taken for granted and all of the EU-member states today have implemented guarantees of press freedom in their constitutions and judicial systems. In Press Freedom and Pluralism in Europe, researchers from twelve countries examine media systems regarding conditions for independence and pluralism. They discuss a European approach to press freedom and diversity and include case studies of a broad spectrum of media systems including Bulgaria, the Baltics, Poland, Romania, Finland, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain and the UK.
The volume examines how other factors such as economic influences, historic, cultural and social conditions also have a substantial impact on media independence. With its topical subject matter and a need for new media policies facing a changing media world, Press Freedom and Pluralism in Europe is an essential resource for media studies and journalism scholars."

"A multitude of factors affect how the European media industry is governed, including commercialisation, concentration, convergence and globalisation. George Terzis’ collection, European Media Governance, is the first volume to concentrate on analysing and explaining how European countries are slowly conceding control of the media from the government to the market, professional and public forces.
This impressive volume provides a detailed examination of all aspects of media governance, including media ownership structures, government policies, citizen’s organisations and union’s accountability systems, for 32 European countries. European Media Governance includes recent research into technological developments and provides sources for more information in each country. In addition to this incredibly diverse scale of research and analysis, the book provides a companion website with regular updates.
Terzis’ European Media Governance addresses all aspects of media governance in Europe, reflecting contemporary developments in both the countries analysed and their media, creating a comprehensive and reliable source. "

Présentation de l'éditeur sur son site :
"Radio, the oldest form of electronic broadcasting, has been described as the last medium to go digital. Yet developments have been underway for over twenty years to create new technologies and digital platforms for the transmission of radio in digital form. Drawing upon extensive cross-national research conducted by the Digital Radio Cultures in Europe research group, this volume offers the first comprehensive review of the complex environment in which European digital radio now operates. The title describes the technologies, policies and different strategies utilized to bring radio into the digital era.
O’Neill and his co-editors present detailed studies of the development of Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), successes and failures in digital radio implementation, and future scenarios for radio in a fully converged media environment. Essays address the fact that radio now stands at a crossroads in its development, and question whether the medium has a viable future or whether it will converge with other forms of multimedia and audiovisual media services. Digital Radio in Europe provides an accessible introduction for the student, researcher and practitioner to the technologies and policies for digital radio broadcasting in both a European and global context."
